Jameson is Figuring Out What Foods he Likes and (Really)Hates.
A few weeks ago we started feeding Jameson baby food. We started with making the food ourselves (well Bea made the food). The first dish we tried was potato, and before we get to the did he like it or not, Bea read that you should have the baby try something for at least five days before deciding if they hate it or not. Well, it did not take five days for us to know that potatoes were not Jameson’s favorite or even a tolerable food. You know that shake we all do when we don’t really like something, with the potato that is when I learned babies do that too. So, that meant after those few days it was time to try something else.
While we were trying the potatoes Alberston’s had baby food on sale. A brand called Beech-Nut, for one dollar a jar, up to 10 jars. So we bought one of each of the single flavors they had. Now that we had some variety we could really start to narrow down what Jameson would and wouldn’t eat. We started with sweet peas, and at first, he wasn’t really sure about it, but over the next few days, he was really getting into it. After that came carrots, and he likes that even better, even taking his thumb out of his mouth and keeping it open for more. Which we took as a good sign because this kid always has at least one of his thumbs in his mouth, and if not a thumb both hands.
Then we tried sweet potatoes and I think his whole world changed after trying them. Now when we would feed him that his hands wouldn’t even go back into his mouth once he started eating it. He would think about putting them back in, but then would open his mouth wide and wait for more. I think we had a clear winner so far in this taste test.
Bea then picked up some baby food from someone whose baby didn’t like it, and that is when we learned that they made various meat baby foods. The ones that the person gave us were turkey in gravy, chicken, and one ham. We tried the turkey first, and Jameson absolutely hated it, even more so than he did the potatoes. He actually was trying to make himself throw up after the second spoon of it. So, we switched to butternut squash instead, which was also a big hit. But only a big hit after he started to trust that we weren’t going to give him anymore of that nasty turkey. We only tried turkey for like two days, it was clear he wasn’t enjoying it, so we weren’t going to make him suffer.
After the turkey came the chicken, it went over way better than the turkey did. But he still wasn’t a fan of it. This time it was just a face of why are you trying to feed me this, which is better than trying to make himself throw up, so we were taking that as a win. But once opened baby food is only good for three days, so it’s just fruits and vegetables from now on.
The last food we have tried so far was apple sauce, and he likes it a lot too, he ate the whole jar in one sitting. But on the downside, we don’t think it is a very good dinner for him. The night we fed him the apple sauce he was completely wired and would not go to sleep until almost two hours after his normal bedtime. And mixing that with now getting used to sleeping with his helmet, he was up a lot of the night. Creating a very cranky baby for mom to deal with the next day.
Now I do want to say that the meat baby food was not from Beech-Nut, but was from Gerber. I’m sure that doesn’t matter, but I just wanted to get that out there for anyone reading this thinking about what they want their baby to try. And I know since they sell it, some babies out there just like it, but, certainly, Jameson is not one of those babies.
